I finally have my latest kit, Daniel in my store at GDS. Daniel is named after my 10 year old son & is inspired by some of his favorite things. Bright new denim and buttery soft leather from his closet and soft beige, cream and chambray blue from his shirt drawer combine with dark reds and greens picked from his room décor. Here is the layout I created using this template. After a hard day working in the garden, you need a cool drink :)

Journaling reads: You thought it was cute to teach the miniature horses to drink pop out of a can. Precious & Little Man loved the idea. The only problem is that now we can't set a can of pop down if they are around cause they drink it!

Happy Easter! It was a quiet day with family for me, nice and relaxed. It was a bit chilly for egg hunting today though, so we made it short and promised a repeat next weekend if it is warmer. That, and the bribes of chocolate, seemed to make the kiddos happy. We also spent some time this evening just chatting about our faith and why Easter is special for us. I hope all of you have enjoyed your Easter Sunday!

No, not me - just quoting my son. I am blessed with children who have a sense of humor and can be quite the little pranksters at times. Here is a layout I recently finished for the Quickpage Exchange at GDS that showcases some of their antics:

Journaling reads: Sometimes you like to act silly. I'm still not sure what you said to your brother. One minute you were smiling sweetly & the next he was racing away saying "I'm out of here!"

I finally found some free time after the kids went to bed to finish a layout. Not a CT layout, not one promoting my designs or challenges, but one just for fun. The style is a little outside my comfort zone and I like the results. I think Doris will like it too.

We get very little snow here in Oklahoma. So when we were able to spend time in Canaan Valley in northern West Virginia, the kids were thrilled by all the fluffy white snow to play in. This is just a candid shot of my little star getting ready to go outside and play. Click on the layout for a larger view.

It's another hectic Monday here for me, as I'm sure it is for a lot of you. And it also means that it's my day for the Daily Download at GDS. Here is a peek at what I created for you this time:

I love playing with brushes & it fascinates me to start with a blank page and end up with a pretty paper. I hope you enjoy these papers as much as I enjoyed creating them.

Tutorial for Curled Ribbons

ckbymommy at GDS found this tutorial for curling ribbons. No plugins are required :) I had to play with it this evening before going to bed & here are my results:

The curled ribbons coordinate with my Dreaming in Blue kit, available in my store at GDS. You can find the Curled Ribbon and Bows tutorial here. This is a good tutorial for those who don't have the commercial plugins to make curled ribbon. It is written for PS, but should be able to be applied to other programs that have a warp brush or deform tool available.

Here is a layout I did using this template. When we bought our boat last summer, we took it to a river near the house to try it out. Our youngest dd is a bit stubborn at times & just wouldn't heed mom's advice. Talk about a bad hair day!

Journaling reads: I tried to tell you that you should put your hair up before we went out in the boat. You just wouldn't listen. I guess some of life's lessons you just have to learn for yourself.

According to our furry weather forecasters, we are going to have an early spring. The groundhogs in the news today were reported to not see their shadows, which according to legend means an early spring. Had they seen their shadows this morning, legend tells that we would have six more weeks of winter weather.

A Dreary Day & A New Sketch Challenge

It's a dreary day here today, with drizzling rain off & on and the temperatures steadily falling. Sometimes I think I would rather have snow than rain in the winter. It would certainly mean a lot less mud to deal with, lol.

It's a beautiful frosty morning here. Hubby is suffering with an abscessed tooth and will have to endure a root canal. Other than that, we are doing pretty good. I found some time to scrap yesterday & put together this layout using an older Christmas pic.

Is It Only Thursday???

This week feels like it is just dragging along. It seems like it should be the weekend by now & it's only Thursday. Both girls are under the weather with a nasty virus & I woke today with a splitting headache. So that should tell you how my day is going. Not to mention the cold drizzle outside. It could be worse though. The temperature could have fallen last night & we would be buried in ice and snow instead of rain.

Starting a New Year

Week 2 of the Recipe Exchange

Week 1 of the Recipe Exchange is over and there were some really great recipe cards created. Here was my card for Week 1:

Today we started Week 2 of the Recipe Exchange. This week's theme is "Cookies". Not necessarily Christmas cookies, but any cookie recipe that is a favorite of your family and friends. Here is my first card for Week 2:

Winter Fun

When I started digi-scrapping, I set a goal for myself to complete one layout per day. Well, I'm not even coming close to meeting my goal this year. I did finish this 2 page layout today using some older photos of the kids sledding and playing in the snow while we were living in Pennsylvania. As an adult, I gripe about snowy weather, complain about having to drive in it, shovel it, etc. But through the eyes of my children, it's not something to complain about. A Recipe Exchange

There hasn't been a lot going on at home lately, just work and school. I'm trying hard to get in the Christmas spirit, but I haven't had much success so far. I hope to get our tree up this week & do some baking and candy making. That should help put me in the mood. I have my Christmas kit almost ready to upload to the store. I am hoping to have it in the store this week. Then I can move on with some other ideas I have for designs.

I almost forgot...we did have a bit of excitement Saturday evening at the farm. We had prowlers attempting to catch our miniature horses and colts in the front pasture. It was late evening, dark and about 20 degrees outside. Hubby found their four-wheeler hidden in the brush & called the sheriff. Turned out to be some adolescent boys. No real harm was done, so we decided not to press charges this time. I can't promise dh will be that lenient if it continues to happen. That's about it on the home front, so I'm heading to bed.

New Sketch Challenge & News

I didn't realize how spoiled I have become in regards to my internet usage until my DSL bit the dust yesterday. They were kind enough to give me dialup till they fixed the problem and that was appreciated. I just didn't remember how slow our dialup really is. Good news is they have the DSL repaired now. This gives me more consideration for those users that are still stuck with dialup.

We've had more of our crazy Oklahoma weather this week. We started the week in the balmy mid 70's. Then a front moved in and temperatures took a nosedive to highs in the 30's yesterday. Fortunately we didn't get as much snow as they predicted, less than an inch. But we did get a lot of rain and some ice before the snow. I grew up in the north, with lots of snow. It sure is pretty to look at, but I'd rather not have much. I guess I've lived away from real winter too long.

A New Kit & Other News

I recently added a winter/holiday themed kit to the store at goDigitalScrapbooking. My grandmother had boxes and boxes of Christmas ornaments and the ones that bring back the fondest memories were a set of silvery bell ornaments with glittered designs. That memory is the inspiration for my newest kit, Silver Bells, combining soft hues of blues and violet with a touch of shimmer and glitter. Complete snowflake alpha included. Here is a preview. I also have a new series of paper packs in the works. The Barely There Collection features soft colors and subtle textures, with some of the papers having patterns that are barely there. Sunday Ramblings

It's been a hectic week. Lots of work at the farm and then Thanksgiving. Oh, and we all shared a lovely virus this week as well. I sometimes wish we would just all be sick at the same time instead of staggering it out & passing it back and forth. We did have a great Thanksgiving dinner at hubby's grandmother's home with the usual assortment of delicious food. We had a lot of the family's old favorites and some new dishes as well. Such as the caramel apple pie one of his aunts prepared. Delicious! And now it's all downhill to Christmas. As usual, I don't have my shopping done. Have barely even started.

I finally got a layout scrapped with one of the photos from our scenic fall drive a couple weeks ago. I did get the kids to pose for a few shots, but I couldn't get Doris to smile for a one.

Lazy Sunday

We are enjoying a lazy Sunday afternoon. We went to church this morning, then had a quiet family dinner. The kids rode their horses for a while and are playing outside. I am taking some time to scrap. Here is a layout I just finished.

Journaling: You had your first ski lesson today at Canaan Valley State Park, WV. I was so proud of you. You listened attentively to the instructor and followed his instructions. It was no time till you were moving around with ease on the beginner slope. You seemed to really enjoy the outing and learning a new sport.

A Saturday Drive

Saturday afternoon we went for a drive looking at fall colors. We ended up at an old tower site in the National Forest near our home. There used to be a fire lookout tower here, but all that remains are a few concrete anchors amid the rocks. The kids love to climb on the rocks. It was almost dark, so my photos aren't that great.

Sunday was a lazy day, church and then dinner, with no company. It was pouring rain all day so we just relaxed with a movie. Finally got to watch Eight Below. I really enjoyed a family weekend with no company, no errands to run, etc. I hope we can have more of these.

New Girls on the Farm

I know, I'm a really terrible blogger. :( I've just been busy. We acquired 2 new weanling quarter horses last weekend and here is a layout with some photos of them. Please ignore hubby's boat with the bright blue tarp in the background.

Journaling reads: Our two new fillies arrived today. Mysty Sunfyre is a spunky sorrel with a beautiful flaxen mane & tale and a small star. Dixie Sweetheart is a rich bay with a sweet, loving nature. We hope these two babies will mature into top producing broodmares.

The kit used is Vino d'Annata, with the brads from Punk Boy, both by Miki Ferkul. Both kits are available at Scrapbook-Elements. The fiber is mine. Fonts are CK Dandy and Abrazo Script Bold.

And I have found a home to sell my designs. I will announce the site in a few days. Yes, I'm going to keep you in suspense. I will be out of town tomorrow & return early Saturday, so I should have news for you then.

It's been a hectic week and weekend here. I have been buried in quarterly farm paperwork in addition to the usual. All of our record keeping is done on the computer. I will be so happy when we can afford the handheld computers and specialized software to enter the data as the task is done. It will make it much easier for all involved. And probably more accurate, lol.

Doris was baptized last Sunday evening. She was a little nervous, but happy at the same time. I was extremely proud of her! She is maturing so fast. I'm off to bed now & hope to have some time to scrap tomorrow.

I started this kit to scrap some photos of our miniature horse Precious and finally have it finished. I reworked the papers a little from my originals, to add a little grunge and distressing. Today has been a glorious day for our family. I want to shout the news from the rooftops. Our baby girl Doris has just accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior! She will be baptised next Sunday at our church. If Randy & I never accomplish another thing in this life, we have succeeding in leading all three of our children to Christ. And that is so very important to both of us. Now our mission is to continue to help them grow as Christians and develop their relationship with God. I only pray we can set a living example for them to follow.

House Rules

I am creating new rules for our house. I plan to print these and post them conspicuously around the house and the farm office.

It isn't nice, or acceptable, to empty my new bottle of clear, clarifying shampoo into your bath water as bubble bath, and then refill the bottle with water so it appears as though it is still full.
Leaving umpteen pairs of shoes by the door is no longer allowed. I mean, really, how many pairs can you wear at once???
Please refrain from leaving a glass of _________ uncovered and teetering on the edge of the refrigerator shelf so that when unsuspecting Mom opens the door, it comes showering out.
Nail polish is not allowed to be used without parental guidance from this time forward. Did you think I wouldn't notice the artwork on the bathroom vanity???
Please don't let the dog in the bathroom when I am in the shower. There is a reason I shut the doors. I promise I won't escape through some secret exit.
The hallway is not a racetrack. You don't get extra points for how fast you can get from your bedroom to the living room.
To the dog: It isn't necessary to guard my _________ from me!
Please be aware that I have ordered the fingerprint kit and surveillance cameras to catch "not me".

I will probably add to this list from time to time. These are just a few things that got under my skin in the last few days. I sometimes wonder how my mother survived. Hope you are all enjoying a great weekend!

A Couple of New Layouts

I had some free time this evening & completed a couple of new layouts. The first is A Kiss for Grandma. It brings her such joy to spend time with her grandchildren.

Journaling: You are such a sweet and affectionate child, always lavishing us with hugs and kisses. I think this photo conveys just how happy this makes your Grandma. You are truly such a blessing in all of our lives!

Layout - A New Arrival

A couple of years ago we had the opportunity to live in northern West Virginia while dh was working on a project there. The company rented a house for us in Canaan Valley. We were on our way to town one morning and had the pleasure of seeing this doe with her newborn fawn. Luckily I had the camera with us & got a couple of nice shots of the new arrival.

Roses

I just received Park's email newsletter and they have the most gorgeous landscape roses on sale. Now, these are my kind of roses. Hardy, carefree, drought and disease resistant. I love beautiful gardens and flowers but I just don't have what it takes to be a successful gardener. I lack that proverbial "green thumb". My first choice is Fourth of July, described as a climbing rose with apple scented blooms.

Next in my lineup is Rockin Robin. It is a shrublet rose, larger than a miniature, and perfect for borders or containers. It also boasts a rich apple scent.

Last but not least is Blushing Knock Out, a gorgeous rose with clusters of 3 inch pink bubblegum blooms. It is shade tolerant and loves humidity, so it will be perfect. Oh, and I can get this one free with the email coupon from their newsletter.

Now, I just have to convince dh that these are necessary, lol.

Is anyone else out there having sinus trouble? Mine are terrible, quite unusual for this time of year for me. I awoke this morning feeling like someone hit me in the middle of the forehead with a really big hammer. Here's another layout of Doris with her many expressions. Not the usual sweet smile though.

I Made It

I made it to Round 2 of the ScrapArtist Apprentice Challenge! I'm just thankful I didn't have to do the judging. I still am in awe of all the amazing submissions. Congratulations to all of those continuing on in Round 2. To those who didn't make it, don't lose hope. All of the entries were beautiful and creative and you should be proud of your talent.

Yesterday afternoon was so beautiful here. Warm and sunny, with a slight cool breeze. We finished schoolwork a little early, so dh took Daniel & Doris out in the boat fishing for a little while. JoAnn & I went on a little nature walk on our property. I don't get to spend much time with just one child at a time, so this walk was special to both of us. Much to hubby's dismay, I have convinced him to leave some areas untouched, to let the weeds and wildflowers grow. There are several in bloom now & I had the opportunity to play with the macro mode on my camera. Then we went to the back pasture to check on some of the horses. Here is a layout to remember our walk and the wildflowers in bloom.

Journaling: We went on a walk this afternoon. Just the two of us. Dad took Doris and Daniel out in the boat fishing. I had you all to myself! That doesn't happen very often. We talked and laughed and took lots of pictures. And I picked this pretty yellow wildflower for you to remember the fun we shared.

Last year, my dh purchased this horse named Rooster for Doris. He was supposed to be this fantastic kid's horse, shown by an eight year old, etc. Hubby rode him, he was fine, so he brought him home. Rooster isn't a bad horse, he just has a bit of an attitude. Doris is a little intimidated by him at times and prefers to ride one of the older mares. But not JoAnn! She shakes her finger at him, talks to him, tells him how it's going to be. And the amazing thing is, he seems to actually listen to her. I have to laugh each time they have one of their heart to heart talks.

Look at Life with the Eyes of a Child

I learn to appreciate so much from my children. The little things I take for granted are all important and amazing to them. This must be God's way of grounding me, of pointing me back in the right direction. Of telling me to slow down, look around and appreciate what He has created. I found this quote recently and it seemed perfect for this page.

Journaling: This was the first time you had been to Lake Michigan. You were amazed by the expanse of water, stretching as far as you could see. You took off running as fast as you could to the edge of the water, then just stood there, looking around in wonder.

Great news regarding my dh!

My dh Randy had a rather extensive cardiac workup today and left with a great report. I was very pleased that the cardiologist was present during the stress test and the echocardiogram. The cardiologist told him that his heart was in great health and that the bradycardia was to be expected in someone in his condition. He didn't think the chest pain was cardiac in origin, but suspects it may be esophageal spasm from reflux. He started him on some medication for that & we will see if things improve. Thanks to all who have kept us in their thoughts and prayers. And thanks to our Lord for keeping watch over us.

Today would have been my Mom's 71st birthday. It seems hard to believe that 12 years have passed since we lost her. It is a bittersweet day for me, filled with so many memories, and tinged with sadness that she isn't here with us. I take comfort in knowing that we will be together again one day. I wanted to scrap a page in her memory and I started digging through what few photos I have of my family. Almost all of them were lost in a house fire. And now, the news.... I've been accepted by Denise Bailey for her Creative Team. This is my first CT and I am excited to be working with Denise's designs. Tranquility was a dream to work with for this page and the pressed flowers were just perfect. She has several lovely and versatile kits in the store. I feel like a kid turned loose in the proverbial candy shoppe, lol.

On a more personal note, later today my dh goes for his first cardiologist appointment and a stress test. Keep us in your prayers that all goes well. He has been having bradycardia, an abnormally slow heart rate.

ScrapArtist Apprentice Challenge

Most of you already know about the ScrapArtist Apprentice Challenge. However, some of you may not, lol. There have been a lot of amazing entries with incredible talent showcased thus far. Unfortunately, they had to take the gallery with the Apprentice Freebie submissions off-line due to excessive bandwidth usage. There's been a lot of talk about piracy and hotlinking today, and some complaining and bickering.

They will be putting the Apprentice Freebie Gallery back online sometime tomorrow, but only ten at a time. Here is a preview of my submission.

I am still in awe of all the beautiful and creative submissions. And I would like to wish each and every one of the talented designers the very best of luck! Even if I never make it past the next round of design challenges, I am still thankful for the opportunity.

Looking Back

Here's a layout I did last night. I am trying to scrap some of the older photos of the children and it sure does bring back memories.

Daniel was looking through the viewer at the baby giraffe while we were at the Brookfield Zoo. The giraffe kept ducking his head and looking back toward us. It was hilarious, and all I could think of was that silly song.

Yes, I've been missing a few days, so I'm a bad blogger. I will make up for it with a new freebie later today.

My dh had been a little under the weather the last few days. Therefore, more of the farm duties fall on my shoulders, which means less free time to scrap & play. I am hopeful that he will be back to normal soon!

I did this layout for a challenge at Butternug Squash Designs and I really like the way it turned out. Credits: "Jam-Tastic" by Christy Sturm at Butternug Squash Designs; Staples from the Collaberation Kit by the Digi-Dare-Ya design team; Sketch by Becky Fleck; Title and tag by me using Christy's papers and PS actions by Atomic Cupcake. Fonts: Trajan Pro and LD Tillie. I love Christy's papers, the textures are terrific & look so realistic.

On another note, I am undecided what to offer as a freebie after "Enchanted Mesa" is finished. (Only one download remaining.) Apple Pie Wednesday

jburkhart posted a pie quiz on her blog a few days ago & there were so many tasty pies discussed, it spurred me to dig through my pie recipes.

Apple pie is always a favorite in our family. This particular apple pie is absolutely delicious! The recipe for Southern Ambrosia Apple Pie is by Linda Hunter of Drummond, Oklahoma. Our electric cooperative organized a benefit bake-off last year to raise funds for the JD McCarty Center for Children with developemental disabilities. This was the grand prize winner and after baking it, I can see why. It was published in the Oklahoma Living magazine for cooperative members. They no longer have it online in their archives, so I will put it here for those interested.

Southern Ambrosia Apple Pie

1 pastry shell, 9"

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup apple juice

2 T butter or margarine

2 T cornstarch

1/4 tsp salt

4 cups thinly sliced, peeled baking apples

2 tsp lemon juice

1 egg

2/3 cup evaporated milk

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup flaked coconut

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Line pastry shell with foil. Bake at 450 degrees for 5 minutes. Remove from oven, remove foil and cool. In a sauce pan over medium heat, bring sugar, apple juice, butter, cornstarch and salt to a boil. stir in apples and lemon juice; cook and stir until apples are crisp-tender, 5 to 8 minutes. Pour into pastry shell. In a smal bowl, beat eggs, milk, sugar, coconut, vanilla and cinnamon; mix well. Pour over apple mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes or until set. Cool on a wire rack.

Pecan Cream Topping

1 pkg (8 oz) cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup sugar

3/4 cup chopped pecans, toasted

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 carton frozen whipped topping, thawed

Whole pecans, toasted

For topping, beat cream cheese and sugar in a mixing bowl. Stir in pecans and vanilla. Fold in whipped topping. Spread over cooled pie. Garnish with toasted whole pecans by making a row of pecans about 1 1/2 inches from crust and placing one in center. Chill 4 to 6 hours.

My notes: I find it better in a 10" deep dish pastry shell. And we seldom get to let it chill for 4 to 6 hours. Hubby prefers it at room temperature.

In Remembrance

Please join me in remembrance of all those who lost their lives or lost their loved ones during the 9/11 attacks five years ago. I can remember watching the breaking news on CNN as the twin towers were devastated and thinking how many were suffering. My prayers are with the survivors, and with all the honorable men and women who serve to protect our nation and prevent future acts of terrorism.

I just found out I won the Photography Celebration Challenge at Butternug Squash Designs. Oh, I know it's not an Emmy or anything, lol, but I'm am just surprised to win. I recently found this site & they had some great, fun challenges this weekend. Here is my winning entry.

A Busy Weekend

It has been a busy, but fun weekend. We bought a fish/ski boat on Friday, the first boat we have owned. Of course, we had to get it wet. Problem was, both of our farm employees had the weekend off, so we had to work. Saturday, we went to a boat landing a few miles from the farm and played on the river a little while. The kids loved it! It was only the second time they had been in a boat and the first time it was a smaller, much slower one. I was worried they would be scared. Boy, was I wrong.

One thing I didn't realize was how dull my screen was becoming on the notebook.....I thought it was my eyes all this time.

The kids love to get out and explore nature and we are fortunate to live close to several National Forest and State recreational areas and lakes. These photos were taken at a picnic area on Talimena Drive, a scenic drive that spans 54 miles in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas.

Those Boots!

Daniel absolutely loves his boots. He does not however, have any sense of fashion, lol. Or maybe one could say he just has a unique sense of style. We went camping with our horses at a nearby National Forest Campground last month. It was sooooo hot! Daniel had been lounging around, barefoot of course. The kids have been told they have to wear boots or shoes whenever they are around the horses. When we went to take care of the horses for the evening, he came out of RV with those boots. I snapped this shot of him with his horse Lightning & he will probably kill me for it when he gets older.

The Tractor, and Another Freebie

We live in the country and raise beef cattle, swine and horses. So it is inevitable that we have a tractor, or two. We "inherited" an older tractor when dh's father passed away. This tractor was not built in the USA. I'm not complaining about it's origin. It is a workhorse tractor, always starts in cold weather (contrary to our other one) and is easy to maneuver. It's just that obtaining parts for it is a nightmare. Three weeks ago, the front axle broke, fell out on the ground, and put the tractor to a screeching halt. DH proceeded to order the parts required from the local dealer, asking for overnight delivery. We have about 60 acres of hay that needs to be cut and baled.

A couple days later, the dealer phoned to tell us the parts weren't in stock & he would have to order them direct from the manufacturer. Delivery time.....approx. 6 days by air, or up to 6 weeks by ship. Of course, dh chose air shipping. And started calling every dealer he could find in about forty states. Unsuccessfully, I might add. No parts in stock.

Last week, he calls the dealer to check on the status of the order. Now he's told the factory doesn't have the main axle and will have to make one. How long??? He doesn't know. So the search is on again. A friend suggested parts from a salvaged tractor. I didn't even know they had tractor salvage. By the grace of God, dh did find the parts he needed at a tractor salvage sales, made the trip to get them today and hopefully, will have the poor tractor back in operation tomorrow. And new parts for backup, if they ever make it here. And now, on to the freebie.....

Latest Layout

I had a miserable migraine headache yesterday evening and had to lie down. So now I can't sleep. What better time to work on my layouts? Nobody is up to interfere, lol. But it sure will make for a long day today.

The kids always seem to end up on a horse, even if it's just to ride a short way. Thunder never seemed to mind, as he knew he would get a treat from them. Unfortunately, Thunder isn't with us anymore. He contracted West Nile Virus, although he had been vaccinated. He became very ill and was not responding to treatment, so we made the decision to euthanize him rather than prolong his suffering. He was 12 years old & we raised him from a foal. We miss him dearly.

The papers & buttons used are from the "July MegaKit" at Digital Divas Designs. Each month they give away an awesome MegaKit composed of Ashley's designs and contributions from forum members. The flowers are from "Jenspiration" by Victoria Stegall for oscraps, colorized to match.
